Following a research by FCI and the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, they in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and KIRDI implemented this project in Kakamega, Butere Mumias and Bungoma, Kenya. The project’s major goal was to promote the production of high quality palm oil in Western Kenya. Under the project, farmers were encouraged to fully adopt oil production as an income- generating activity. Funds were provide to kick start this. Farmers were evolved into business units and facilitated to bulk, grade and store their produce to ensure consistent supply. Partnerships were formed with farmers’ representatives, development organizations, Ministry of Agriculture and the private sector. Formal supply contracts were formed between farmers and processors. |
